Dr. Ernest C. Kung’s legacy to atmospheric sciences is primarily through his work in long-range forecasting, atmospheric energetics, and blocking anticyclones, having founded and guided the university’s General Circulation Research Project for three decades. Dr. Kung also served MU in many ways before his retirement in 1999. He represented the Department of Atmospheric Science on the Graduate Faculty Senate from 1972, serving as its President during 1977-78. He was the Campus representative to the university-wide Doctoral Council from 1977 through 1979. He was Chair of the Campus Committee on Student Financial Aids and was Faculty Advisor to the Campus Graduate Student Association. Dr. Kung received the “Outstanding Research Award” from MU Chapter of Sigma Xi in the early 1980’s. He was a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the Royal Meteorological Society. Scholarships will be awarded to students with extraordinary academic achievement.
