The Missouri Nobel Scholarship Fund was established by Nobel Laureate George P. Smith and his wife Marjorie Sable. After winning the prestigious prize, Smith chose to donate the prize money to Mizzou to establish a scholarship fund that supports undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Science.
Why a goal of 118? That is the number of elements in the periodic table of chemical elements, a fitting number of donors for the winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (even though he teaches biology.)
