Richard A. Holmes, M.D. Minority Medical Student Scholarship

On July 25, 2016, we lost a dear friend, Richard A. Holmes, M.D.  Dr. Holmes was a leading African-American physician with a specialty in Nuclear Medicine. He was the first African-American professor at MU School of Medicine, serving on faculty from 1976 – 1994. During his tenure, Dr. Holmes was also the chief of nuclear medicine at the Harry S Truman Memorial VA. In 1994, he left academia to join DuPont / Merck as vice-president of research and development.

Dr. Holmes practiced medicine as a form of community service, devoting his career to his patients, medical students, and the practice of medicine. In honor of his own contributions, family and friends of Dr. Holmes have established a memorial scholarship at MU School of Medicine to further the education of medical students, particularly African-American students and those seeking to care for the under-served. We invite you to honor Dr. Holmes’ legacy and memory with your gift to this fund.
